A Boulder man missing since Oct. 5 was found Tuesday night holding a gun and a bottle of wine.

Boulder police said James “Jim” McPhee, 34, knocked on the door of a home in the 800 block of 7th Street in Boulder and asked the resident for help.

He was carrying a loaded .38 caliber Smith and Wesson revolver and a bottle of Corbett Canyon Merlot, which was half-empty, said police spokeswoman Sarah Huntley.

The resident noticed the gun and took it from McPhee without incident. The resident called 911.

When officers arrived, McPhee was on the ground. He appeared to be disoriented and was continuing to ask for help.

McPhee was taken to Boulder Community Hospital for evaluation and remains under medical care.

The 34-year-old husband and father of two was has told investigators he remembers events prior to about 4 p.m. the day he disappeared, but he has no memory of anything that has happened to him since, Huntley said.

McPhee said he doesn't know where he stayed while he was away, what he did during that time or where he got the gun and the wine, she said.

Detectives said they will continue to investigate the case to determine if any crime has been committed.

Police are asking for the public’s help in finding McPhee’s black 1998 Town and Country minivan with Colorado plates 523 NZX, as well as information about where he might have been staying and how he obtained the weapon.

Anyone with information about McPhee or his disappearance is asked to contact Boulder police at 303-441-3330.

McPhee was reported missing by his wife on Sunday, Oct. 5. He said he was going to return some DVDs to the Boulder Public Library, but he didn't come home and didn't show up for work the next day.

Detectives are continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding his disappearance. McPhee’s vehicle, a black 1998 Town and Country minivan with Colorado plates 523 NZX, has not been found.
