Police: Dog Tied, Put On Burning Phonebook

Lakewood Woman Jailed On Animal Cruelty Charges

A Lakewood woman is in jail after she allegedly hog-tied her 6-year-old Yorkshire terrier to a phone book and placed the phone book on a burning stove, police said.

The terrier suffered burns to 50 percent of its body and is being cared for at Wheat Ridge Animal Hospital in Lakewood.

"When he came to us, he was in pain, with second and three degree burns over 50 percent of his body," said Dr. Elisa Mazzafero, with Wheat Ridge Animal Hospital.

Police said neighbors smelled smoke and heard yelping Sunday morning and called 911.

When police arrived, they found the dog, Bobo, laying on its back on top of the burning telephone book, its legs tied down with speaker wire, said Lakewood police spokeswoman Sheridan Foster.

Officers arrested Tanya Martin, 38, on charges of fourth-degree arson and cruelty to animals, Foster said. She is being held in the Jefferson County Jail on $10,000 bond.

Her uncle, Leo Cordova, said Martin suffers from mental illness.

She made her first court appearance at 10 a.m. Monday to be advised of her rights. Her next court appearance is scheduled for Thursday.

Foster said the fire on the oven did not spread and Bobo is likely to recover. He was badly burned from the neck down.

"He is stable, but my biggest concern is he has the potential to get serious infections and will need skin grafts later on," said Mazzafero.

The Table Mountain Animal Center Foundation is accepting donations for the medical care of Bobo. Donations will be put into a fund and left over money will be donated to help pay for future animal abuse cases, said Ben Drotar.

While the center has received a lot of calls from the public, "Bobo's future is undetermined at this point," Drotar said.
