GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. -- Two people were killed and three people, including the suspected shooter, were injured Saturday after a man opened fire in a neighborhood.

Police said the suspect opened fire outside one of the couple's homes Saturday morning, shot a neighbor who ran to the home to try to help, and also shot himself at one point.

Michael and Floyce Gallagher had gone to pick up their friends Terry and Linda Fine from their home around 8:30 a.m. to head on a vacation when they were approached by a man outside the Fines' home, police said.

The suspect shot Terry and Linda Fine and Floyce Gallagher in the driveway and shot a neighbor, who ran to help after hearing the shots, police said.

Terry Fine, 61, and Floyce Gallagher, 60, died. Linda Fine was hospitalized. Michael Gallagher, former president of Mesa State College, was not injured.

Police did not release the neighbor's name. Police spokeswoman Kate Porras says the neighbor was released from a hospital.

The suspect drove away but later drove off the side of 26 1/2 Road into some trees. Authorities found him with an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound, police said. He was taken to a hospital. His name has not been released.

Police have not determined how the suspect might have known the victims. Police said he was not believed to be from Grand Junction but may have ties to the Denver suburb of Lakewood.
