AURORA -- The "Help Wanted" signs are going up in seasonal fashion, although not all businesses are sure how many employees they’ll hire.“We’re going to wait and see,” said Frankie Hoff, co-owner of The Cookie Company at Southlands Mall in Aurora.“If people are worried about the economy and decide not to spend money then we’ll have to hold back on the employees,” said Hoff.
Chris Howes, president of the Colorado Retail Council said many retailers are falling into that "wait and see" category.Howes told 7NEWS the dismal performance on Wall Street the past two weeks has many retail stores still evaluating how many seasonal workers will be hired, as well as how much inventory will be ordered.A block up Main Street, at Southlands, managers at Francesca’s Collection said they plan to add more staff this holiday season compared to last year.Amanda Bower said prospective employees have already been inquiring.“We had a few today even,” Bower said.Meanwhile, a large banner calling for seasonal associates is posted outside the Honey Baked Ham store at Havana Street and Yale Aveune in Aurora.General Manager Dave Fehrenbach said a new product launch is expected to bring increased business during the store’s busiest periods.Fehrenbach said he expects to hire “30 people for Thanksgiving and probably more for Christmas.”Supervisors at a Denver temp agency said they’re fielding a steady flow of calls from applicants looking for work.“We’re seeing everything, like people coming out of banking and finance,” said Sharon Hendricks, of Express Employment Professionals in Denver. While her employment agency rarely caters to retailers in need of holiday sales help, Hendricks said the fourth quarter remains their busiest. With clients ranging from collection agencies to the State of Colorado, Hendricks said the news from her office is not all bad.The number of job seekers has not increased recently and employees are still needed, Hendricks said. “That’s the optimistic piece, there are still jobs.”
