UPDATED: 11:43 am MDT October 7, 2008

A suspected drunk driver was hospitalized following a crash and shooting on Highway 40 west of Fraser Monday night.

A citizen reported the driver swerving into oncoming traffic around 7 p.m. A few minutes later, a car matching the description was seen by a Grand County deputy sheriff patrolling near Tabernash.

"Before the deputy could stop the vehicle, it took off and the deputy pursued. A short time later, the deputy's vehicle and the suspect's vehicle collided," Sheriff Rod Johnson said in a news release.

Following the crash, the 23-year-old male suspect was shot by the deputy.

The suspect was being treated at St. Anthony Central in Denver Tuesday for gunshot wounds in the neck and abdomen. He was reported in critical condition.

Johnson said the suspect was a county resident, but would not identify him.
