A man killed in a skiing accident on Taylor Glacier in Rocky Mountain National Park was identified Thursday as a 40-year-old Boulder resident.

Matthew Chesaux was skiing alone on loose rock, snow and ice, when he fell and died from massive trauma, said Larimer County Deputy Coroner James A. Wilkerson IV.

Wilkerson ruled Chesaux's death an accident.

Friends contacted the park Tuesday night and said Chesaux was overdue. They found his body Wednesday morning and notified park rangers, said park spokesman Larry Frederick.

The victim's body was flown out of the area and turned over to the Larimer County Coroner's Office. Chesaux was an experienced skier and mountain climber and was wearing a helmet at the time of the fall.

Taylor Glacier is 5.2 miles from the Bear Lake Trailhead but cannot be reached by trails. Access to the area requires a 2,600 foot elevation gain in difficult, steep terrain.
