DENVER -- A Denver police technician who works with the juvenile intake bureau has been charged with two felony counts of sexual assault on a child after a girl told police that he groped her and licked her.James Edward Dennis, 61, was arrested after the victim told her parents about the alleged assault.According to an arrest affidavit released Tuesday, Aurora police detective William Cavalieri said Dennis took a young girl to lunch at McDonald's earlier this March and then to a vacant house.
While there, the victim said she was doing a handstand with her eyes closed. When she finished, Dennis "put his hand down her pants and touched her butt and asked if she liked it," Cavalieri said. The victim said Dennis "then lifted up her shirt and started licking her."The girl said she asked Dennis to stop and "he said he was a little drunk," Cavalieri said. "James told her not to tell anyone about this." The girl told Dennis' wife about the assault, who also told her "not to tell anyone."The victim eventually told her mother and grandmother, who reported the assault to police.Dennis, who has been with the Denver Police Department since 1979, has been suspended without pay as the investigation continues. He has since filed for retirement, said Denver police spokesman Sonny Jackson. He was charged on Sept. 22 and is expected to appear in court on Wednesday.
