PARACHUTE, Colo. -- Authorities are trying to find out who planted hundreds of marijuana plants in a small canyon near Parachute. Garfield County Sheriff Lou Vallario said about 890 plants were seized by the Two Rivers Drug Enforcement Team (TRIDENT) last week, with some as tall as 10 feet."It's probably the biggest one that I can recall in Garfield County," Vallario said.
A small stream was used as a watering system for the plants. Vallario said it appeared someone had been camping at the canyon to take care of them. He said documents with names on them, found on the site, could lead authorities to a suspect. Vallario said the canyon is on commercially-owned land, but the owner didn't know about the plants.TRIDENT estimated the plants to be worth more than $1 million dollars.
