AURORA, Colo. -- A proposed city budget in Aurora could mean a cut in library, pool, police and fire services in an effort to make up for a $10 million budget shortfall.Budget officers proposed cutting 50 positions, 42 of which are already vacant but include six front-desk positions at the police department and six firefighters. The proposed budget would also close the Chambers Plaza Public Library, shorten hours at other libraries and shut down the Fitzsimons Swimming Pool.
Aurora's budget officer, Jason Batchelor, blames the money woes on the increased costs of doing business and lower than expected revenue."Asphalt has gone up 67 percent in the last two to three years. Fuel has gone up pretty dramatically," he said. "These are very difficult choices that are being considered."But city council member Steve Hogan said the situation is not as dire as it seems."I do think the money is there," said Hogan. "There's a recommendation to create $1.5 million worth of challenge grants and thought funds. To me, that's the wrong priority."The city council will have an all-day workshop next week to talk about the proposed budget, which it will finalize in October.
