Supermarkets rely on refrigeration systems to keep foods safe and beverage storage.

But, those systems can emit greenhouse gases that contribute to climate change.

The Environmental Protection Agency is partnering with supermarkets nationwide to put the freeze on these emissions.

It's called GreenChill.

Since launching last November, the EPAs GreenChill Advanced Refrigeration Partnership has prevented emissions of 2.5 million metric tons of carbon dioxide, which is equivalent to the as emissions from 500,000 cars.

GreenChill partner Honeywell International specializes in the development and manufacture of non-ozone depleting refrigerants for commercial refrigerators.

A lot of your grocery stores are green chill partners, like Publix, Giant Eagle, Albertsons, and Jewel Osco.

If every supermarket in the nation reduced their emissions to the current GreenChill average, they could prevent 13 million metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent.
