Oct. 25, 2002: Hero Helps Move Women Through Cancer Journey

Marcia McGilley Runs The 'Cancer Fit-Spa'

UPDATED: 10:34 a.m. MDT October 26, 2002

If you're battling cancer, the last thing you want to think about is exercising. However, more and more studies show that proper physical activity can improve cancer treatments and help patients overcome depression.

The women at the Cancer Fit Spa are all on personal journeys, battling cancer.

Marcia McGilley (pictured, left), this week's 7Everyday Hero, runs the Cancer Fit Spa. She started working with the project after beating cancer herself, and knows all too well how chemotherapy can rob one's energy.

Marcia says, "I was very weak, I was tired, I was depressed."

The goal is to rejuvenate the body, mind and spirit of women moving through their battle with cancer.

"You know, when you go through chemo and you go through cancer, you don't have a lot of control over anything. But when I have control over my body and exercising and making myself feel better, that means a lot to me," says cancer patient Vonnie Stransky.

The exercises and instruction are tailored to their unique needs.

"I happen to have cancer of the bone and throughout and so we just have to pay attention to a lot of different areas," says another patient with cancer, Mary Bell.

Marcia says, "When I come up to the door in the morning, I stand there and I take a deep breath and I realize that we might not save any lives for cancer today but that we will help make their journey better."

For doing such a wonderful job with the Cancer Fit-Spa, 7NEWS and Subway honors this week's 7Everyday Hero, Marcia McGilley.
