Police Arrest Driver On Numerous Charges

POSTED: 11:43 am MDT September 2, 2008

It's not often you see a Volkswagen Beetle exceeding 100 mph, but an Arapahoe County sheriff's deputy said he clocked one at 115 mph Monday.

The deputy was working traffic enforcement on northbound Interstate 25 when he said the small vehicle flew past him. The deputy tried to catch up with the the driver and pull him over, but said he stopped his pursuit when the vehicle wouldn't yield.

A few minutes later he found the wrecked vehicle on the Arapahoe Road offramp, where it struck the center median. The suspected driver of the vehicle was seen running through a shopping center parking lot in the 6900 block of South Clinton Street and was arrested.

The driver was identified by deputies as Nathan Hurlbirt, 27.

Hurlbirt and a 26-year-old female passenger were transported to a local hospital where they were examined and released with no injuries.

Hurlbirt was booked into the Arapahoe County Jail on suspicion of vehicular eluding, driving under the influence, reckless driving and driving under restraint.

He was being held on a $10,000 bond.
