Police detonated a suspicious backpack found in downtown Denver Monday morning.

Authorities received a call about an abandoned backpack on the roof of the Civic Center bus station at Colfax and Broadway around 3 a.m. That is between the State Capitol and Denver's City and County Building and across from The Denver Post and Rocky Mountain News.

Bomb technicians determined the backpack was safe, but detonated the device as a precaution at about 3:45 a.m.

John Harrison of the city and county Joint Information Center said it is standard procedure to detonate suspicious items.

Traffic around Colfax, Broadway and Lincoln was closed for a litle more than an hour before the "all clear" was given.
