DENVER -- Two kids were dead inside a vehicle in Castle Pines North and autopsies were under way Thursday to find out how they died.Deputies were called to the 900 block of Brambelwood Drive at 3:15 p.m. on the report of two missing children. Deputies conducted a search and found the kids inside a red Honda parked in front of the home.Investigators would not identitfy the children, however, family members said they are Jasmine Mendieta, 5, and Nathan Mendieta, 2.
The coroner will have to determine what killed them, said Douglas County Sheriff's Office spokeswoman Cocha Heyden. She hoped to have answers by the end of the day on Thursday."The Douglas County Sheriff's Office does not believe the community is in any danger and this is an ongoing death investigation," Heyden said.Four homes in the area were cordoned off as part of the investigation. The family car that the children were found in was also towed. Family members said the children weren't in the trunk, but were in the passenger compartment of the car with the automatic windows rolled up.Jasmine was on the floor in the front and Nathan was on the floor in the back, according to Ken Vanherpen, who identified himself as the children's grandfather.Dona Aldrich, a family friend and neighbor, said the children lived in their grandparent’s home with their mother. They said the mother had recently gotten a divorce and quit her job, but that the children’s father had not been in the picture for months.“They were treasured. That’s why the grandparents took them in, to help them. They wanted to make sure the children felt safe and had a nice place to stay,” said Aldrich.
