DENVER -- The criminal child abuse case against two Lafayette parents became more serious over the weekend with the death of their 9-week-old infant.
Just last week the father of the boy was charged with two additonal counts of child abuse and prosecutors said those charges could be amended if the child died.
Joseph Dowler, 34, and Audra Dowler 19 (pictured, left), were still being held Sunday in the Boulder County jail on a variety of child abuse charges that were filed before their son died.
Initially diagnosed with two broken arms, burns on his feet and forehead and brain damage from a lack of oxygen, doctors found that Tanner Dowling also suffered two broken legs and several broken ribs, Boulder County Deputy District Attorney Colette Cribari said last Thursday. She also said the forehead injury was not a burn, but an abrasion and was misdiagnosed.
The infant was taken off life support equipment at Denver Health Medical Center and died at 9:43 p.m. Saturday night, the hospital confirmed Sunday. The hospital said it was done at the request of the family, although attorneys for Audra Dowler went to court last week in an effort to keep the infant on life support.
The Dowlers were arrested after they took Tanner to a hospital Oct. 4, saying he was unresponsive and had stopped eating. The hospital staff suspected abuse and called police, leading to the Dowlers' arrest that evening.
Joseph Dowler's bond is set at $1 million; his wife's bond is $500,000.
