Suicide Notes Examined In Former Trooper's Death

Jeffco Man Recently Sentenced For Assaults On Child

POSTED: 4:45 p.m. MDT October 12, 2002

A former Colorado state trooper was killed in an auto-pedestrian accident Friday night and officials said he left suicide notes behind.

Gary Born

The death of Gary Born, 48 (pictured, left), came less than two weeks after he was sentenced to two years in a work release program for repeatedly sexually assaulting an 8-year-old family member.

The Jefferson County District attorney's office said Born was also sentenced to at least 20 years probation and a fine of $3,100. He was also ordered to complete a sex offender treatment program.

Born died when a semi-tractor trailer hit him on eastbound Highway 58 just west of the I-70 interchange at 9:14 p.m. The truck driver was not injured in the accident, officials said. Born's car was found nearby.

Born had checked out of the work release facility around 3:30 p.m. to retrieve clothing and personal items and never returned, officials said.

Born was suspended from the State Patrol when the sexual asault charges were filed in March. He had been a trooper since 1991. Born subsequently resigned from the force.
