DENVER -- Park rangers said someone made an illegal base jump off 14,000-foot Longs Peak Wednesday morning.BASE jumping is illegal in Rocky Mountain National Park, reported the Fort Collins Coloradoan. It’s a kind of extreme sport where instead of using an airplane, the skydiver will jump off a mountain or even very tall buildings and towers. The jumper only has a few seconds to deploy the chute before crashing into the Earth.
RMNP spokeswoman Kyle Patterson told the Coloradoan the jumper was spotted around 9 a.m. jumping from the east side Diamond face.A nearby ranger was dispatched to investigate."It’s very rare, and we’re only aware of one other time it’s occurred in the last 10 years," Patterson told the Coloradoan.
