DENVER -- Fort Collins police arrested a man suspected of kidnapping his former girlfriend, one day after the woman was found alive. Travis John Kness was taken into custody on Monday afternoon without a struggle.A driver along County Road 44H saw a man hiding along the side of the road that matched Kness’ description and called police, said Maj. Justin Smith of the Larimer County Sheriff’s Office.
When deputies arrived they found Kness hiding in grass off the side of the road near a creek. Deputies said he had a rifle and a hand gun and was taken into custody without resistance.“We have the citizens to thank for keeping their eyes and ears open,” said Smith. “We are glad the community doesn’t have to worry anymore.” The 32-year-old was wanted in connection with the kidnapping of Rosanna Martinez on July 19.Fort Collins police said he kidnapped Martinez at gunpoint outside a Dollar Tree store more than a week ago.Police said Kness and Martinez had been in a relationship that ended about eight months ago.Investigators feared Kness would take Martinez to the outdoors where, they said, he may have set up supplies and would be able to hide for a long time. When he was arrested, Kness was wearing camouflage clothes, Smith said.“We believed he had supplies in the area,” he said.A search team with up to 50 people and air support looked for Kness and Martinez for about a week.On Sunday, police were surprised to learn Kness had dropped off Martinez at his parent’s house.“It’s unusual to have a kidnapping like this,” Smith said. “It was a welcome surprise.”Kness was taken to the Larimer County Detention center on of charges of second-degree kidnapping, possession of a weapon by a previous offender, menacing with a deadly weapon and reckless endangerment.
