Montrose Officer Shoots At Teen, Misses

Police Arrest Boy On Suspicion Of First-Degree Burglary, First-Degree Assault

POSTED: 1:20 pm MDT July 23, 2008

A critical incident team will investigate an officer-involved shooting in Montrose, following an attack that allegedly occurred late Monday.

Montrose Police Chief Tom Chinn said that Officer Geo Mendoza shot at a 17-year-old boy after the teen attacked Mendoza with a weaon, when he responded to a burglar alarm at a business.

Mendoza missed, and the teen was not hurt. The officer was treated for undisclosed injuries, then negotiated with the suspect to surrender.

Police arrested the boy on suspicion of first-degree burglary and first-degree assault.

He was taken to Grand Mesa Youth Services in Grand Junction.

Mendoza and another officer involved in the incident have been placed on leave.
