CANON CITY, Colo -- A body pulled from the Arkansas River has been identified as that of a man who had been reported missing to Salida police a week earlier. The El Paso County coroner's office said that dental records confirm that 37-year-old James G. Durgan, 37, of Salida, Colo., was the man found dead. Canon City police said kayakers found the body in the spikebuck section of the river on Saturday.
Authorities said Durgan died of a gunshot wound to the head. Durgan had been reported missing on July 12 after last being seen in Canon City. Officials with the Fremont Combined Investigative Response Team found Durgan's 2002 Saturn three days later just east of the Chaffee-Fremont County line, but there was no sign of him until Saturday.Police have not named a suspect in the man's slaying.The Fremont County Sheriff's Office and Colorado Bureau of Investigation are assisting in the case. No arrests have been made.
