DENVER -- Counties across Colorado are taking action to prevent even more wildfires from popping up.Five counties have put fire restrictions in place this week, which means fire restrictions are currently being enforced in 20 counties across the state. In Douglas County, the South Metro Fire Department said that in the last two weeks, firefighters have responded to three times the number of grass fires as that same period last year.
Emergency managers said they have been keeping an eye on fuel moisture, and it is now at the same level as 2002, during the Hayman Fire.Dan Huse, Douglas County's director of emergency management, said the dry conditions combined with heat and high winds are what went into the decision to enact a burn ban."The drier the grass, brush and trees are, the easier they ignite. And once it ignites, it's very difficult to get it out if you can't get to it," said Huse. You can view the full list of Colorado counties with fire restrictions by visiting The Colorado Division of Emergency Management.
