Buff Football Player Guilty Of Assault

Player Career At CU May Be In Jeopardy

The future is uncertain for a University of Colorado football player who pleaded guilty Friday to assaulting two men in a fight on the University Hill.

Riar Geer, 21, is scheduled to be sentenced Aug 18. He could face up to two years in jail, reported the Boulder Daily Camera.

Geer was arrested in March after getting into a fight outside a house party in which he broke the jaw of one man and left the other with a broken tooth.

As part of the plea deal, prosecutors agreed to drop a second-degree felony assault charge and a misdemeanor harassment charge against Geer in exchange for a guilty plea to third-degree assault.

The deal could be important to Geer’s future at CU.

According to Dave Plati, CU’s sports information director, coach Dan Hawkins does not allow convicted felons on the team. A lesser charge falls under Hawkins’ “once is a mistake, twice is a behavior” policy.

That means Geer would be allowed to stay on the team, but "any more run-ins would easily jeopardize his future here," Plati told the Camera.

When Geer was arrested, he was suspended from school as well as the team.

CU spokesman Bronson Hilliard told the Camera Geer continued going to class in the spring while his suspension was under appeal. He said the university put the suspension into abeyance last week.

Plati said the team generally follows the Office of Judicial Affair’s lead when it comes to reinstatement.
