DUI Checkpoint Dedicated To Newlywed Killed After Wedding

Lee Miller's Longmont Family Work With Police To Educate Drivers

POSTED: 11:32 am MDT July 18, 2008

A DUI checkpoint in Longmont Friday night was dedicated to a newlywed who was killed by an impaired driver the day after he was married.

Lee Miller, 28, was pinned between two cars on July 3, 2007 after Connie Petitt's car left the roadway and hit Miller.

He was in the front yard of his in-law's house, in the 1200 block of South Pratt Parkway, loading wedding presents, when he was hit and pinned, severing his leg.

Police said Petitt, 56, was under the influence of prescription medicine at the time of the accident. She pleaded guilty in November to vehicular homicide and was sentenced to four years in prison last January.

Friday night, Longmont police joined Miller’s family for a dedication ceremony outside the police department before running the four-hour DUI checkpoint in his name. They gave drivers fliers detailing Miller’s life and death, along with the young family he left behind.

A total of 696 vehicles were contacted during the operation. Nine drivers were asked to perform roadside maneuvers and three of those drivers were arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol. One additional DUI arrest was made by other officers working Friday night, for a total of four arrests.
