Officer's BAC Over Legal Driving Limit

The blood-alcohol level of a Fort Collins police officer arrested on suspicion of drunken driving last month was above the legal limit, according to the Fort Collins Coloradan newspaper.

The newspaper reported the officer's superiors have opened an internal investigation.

Christopher Van Meter was arrested June 20 by a Colorado State Patrol trooper who stopped him for driving 65 mph in a 55 mph zone.

Van Meter, a patrol officer, could lose his license as a result of the case. He is due in court Aug. 18.

The CSP did not release Van Meter's specific blood-alcohol level, which was checked with a blood test following his traffic stop.

Under state law, people driving with a blood-alcohol level of 0.05 to 0.08 can be charged with driving while ability impaired, or DWAI.

Above 0.08, the charge is driving under the influence, or DUI, and the usual penalty is the loss of license for a year.
