DILLON, Colo. -- The road is closed but a path to a resolution is being paved, although slowly.Colorado's Homeland Security director, Maj. Gen. Mason Whitney, met with Summit County and Denver Water officials at the Dillon Police Department Friday. Calling it "positive and productive," a spokeswoman said a list of recommendations will now go to Summit County Commissioners and the Denver Water Board.Dillon Dam Road was closed July 8 after Denver Water decided their primary source of drinking water, Dillon Reservoir, was vulnerable to attack. The exact of nature of their security concern has never been clear.
The groups will meet again next week.Earlier this week Denver Water rearranged barriers on the road and gave Summit County authorities keys to unlock gates so emergency vehicles could get through. The Lake Dillon Fire Protection District said the gates will slow response time and issued a notice Wednesday ordering Denver Water to comply with local fire codes. The district referred the alleged violation to the sheriff's department. At Chatfield State Park, near Littleton, there's plenty of water but none of the controversy."I'm interested. It doesn't impact our operation," said U.S. Army Corp of Engineers Operations' manager Fred Rios. "We have no credible information that there's a threat to our facility."Rios said one main difference is that the dam around Denver are flood control facilities so the water level is lower."We've also done a vulnerability assessment. And we've addressed some of the issues. We don't it's a concern right now," Rios said.He said there are no plans to close Cherry Creek Dam Road except for Aug. 1-Aug 4 when maintenance work will be done.
