STEAMBOAT SPRINGS, Colo. -- The Routt County Sheriff has been found guilty of driving while ability impaired, avoiding a much more serious driving under the influence conviction.A six-member jury delivered its verdict against Gary Wall on Wednesday, the Steamboat Pilot reported. He was also convicted of failure to dim his headlights and prohibited use of a weapon. The trial lasted three days.The conviction stems from an Oct. 27, 2007 incident in which a Colorado State Patrol trooper pulled Wall over on U.S. Highway 40 for failure to dim his headlights. He was subsequently booked for suspicion of DUI and prohibited use of a weapon, for allegedly being in possession of a firearm while under the influence of alcohol.
The trooper said that Hall refused any tests at the time of his arrest, resulting in a year-long suspension of his driver's license.According to the newspaper report, the Routt County sheriff faces up to 180 days in jail and a fine of up to $500 when he is sentenced for the DWAI conviction.Wall must complete an alcohol evaluation before his sentencing date is set.
