DENVER -- In just 11 days, a new test camera caught 246 drivers running red lightS.Denver is one of at least eight cities, including Aurora, Lone Tree and Greeley, testing the red light cameras at a handful of high traffic intersections.Cherry Hills is gearing up for a camera, while cities such as Lafayette and Thornton are considering adding cameras.
Cameras cropping up across the metro area have created a market for red light warning devices.“It’s just an alert to let you know be careful there is a red light camera coming up,” said Jay Morse, a self-proclaimed technology geek, who turned to his Garmin for direction on red light cameras. He had heard about Web sites where you can download points of interest, POIs, into your GPS device.“Restaurants, banks, anything you can come up with,” said Morse, “including red light camera locations.”Morse programmed his positioning device so that every time he comes near a watched intersection he gets a warning.“None of us likes a ticket. I try to drive safely, but sometimes you can get caught and end up running a short yellow. This just makes me more aware,” said Morse. Some companies that sell radar detectors are including camera locations with their service, but some Web sites offer locations to download for free or a small fee.For one option, check out www.poi-factory.com
