Lawn Mower May Have Sparked Fort Carson Fire
Blaze Grows To 300 Acres

FORT CARSON, Colo. -- Crews are battling a 300-acre wildfire near Fort Carson that authorities believe was sparked by a lawn mower.Fort Carson spokeswoman Brandy Gill said the Army base was notified of the blaze about 10 a.m. Tuesday. She said the fire is burning in grass and trees near the south part, or Gate 6, of the base.The fire is burning in the remote Camp Falcon training area, about one to two miles north of the area's last big fire.
No structures are threatened and no evacuations have been ordered.It has not been contained.Heavy smoke and low visibility from the fire briefly closed Colorado Highway 115 Tuesday afternoon. Flames came within feet of the road.About 60 firefighters and 17 crews from Fort Carson and departments from Colorado Springs and El Paso County are fighting the blaze.A UH-60 Blackhawk helicopter from Buckley Air Force Base is also being used to drop retardant.
