Carpool Lanes To Alleviate T-REX Traffic
POSTED: 4:01 p.m. MDT September 24, 2002
DENVER -- There are some big changes ahead for those of you who drive through T-REX and the good news is it could mean you'll be spending less time behind the wheel.
A new carpool lane is in the works that could alleviate a lot of traffic, 7NEWS reported
That extra lane should be in place by the end of October. It will go straight through the heart of the Denver Tech Center, from Dry Creek to Evans.
The High Occupancy Vehicle lanes will be on both the northbound and southbound sides of Interstate 25.
The catch is that while crews are working these next few weeks, drivers can expect to see at least a half-dozen traffic lane shifts so be prepared for that.
The good news though is that once it's in place, it'll be less restrictive.
"During peak hours, it will be a bus and an HOV lane. But in off-peak hours, anyone can use it and we think this is going to make a real difference on how to get people through the corridor, said T-REX spokeswoman Amy Ford.
Another big change on the way is at the Interstate 225 interchange. In another year, the first phase of that -- the flyover that will take drivers from southbound 25 to 225 -- will be open. That is also an area where light rail is going through.
The entire five year T-REX project is currently on schedule and on budget, T-REX officials said.
The $1.6 billion project will be completed on Sept,1, 2006.
The next bridge coming down is University on Oct. 6, 7 and 8.
