Brighter Living - Cleaner Landfills

Trying To Keep Certain Trash Out of Landfills

Plano, Texas is one of a growing number of American cities that are trying to keep certain trash out of their landfills.

That trash is now being used to create valuable compost.

The Department of Environmental Services collects organic waste from all over Plano.

And local businesses like JC Penney, Frito Lay, and Countrywide Insurance contribute to the program with food scraps from their cafeterias.

The reason is they can take that material and produce compost in the back end and sell it back to our residents and customers.

The result is a fertilizer called Texas Pure, and it is sold at Wal-Marts and other retailers all over Plano, which is just one of many American cities using this innovative idea.

To find out if your city is one of them, just contact your local public works department.
