Learn How To Make A Purse From Placemats

What You Need

2 fringed chenille placemats
Tapestry yarn in contrasting color
Large tapestry needle
Using the tapestry needle threaded with a double strand of the tapestry yarn, whip stitch a line of stitches along the fringed edges of the placemat where the fringe begins. This stitching is for decorative purposes only.
Fold placemat in half, right sides out, fringed ends together.
Using the tapestry needle double threaded with the tapestry yarn, whip stitch the sides of the placemat together.
Turn down the fringed top of what is now the bag about 2" to form a cuff over the top edge of the bag. Now, the fringe is pointing down towards the bottom fold of the bag. Tack cuff in place at the sides
The purse's handles are made from strips cut from a second placemat. From each side, cut a strip about 3 inch wide, the length of the placemat. Remove fringe from the ends of the strips by cutting it off. The strips must be cut from each side to utilize the woven, finished outside edges of the placemat in the making of the handles. Set aside the center section of the placemat. Save for use in another project.
Fold the strip in thirds the long way, with the finished edge on top. Using a double strand of yarn, whip stitch along the edge to sew the handle together.
Whipstitch along the other side of the handle.
Repeat steps 6 and 7 for other handle.
Thread tapestry needle with four strands of tapestry thread. This is most easily done by threading it one strand at a time. Double the yarn so that you are sewing with 8 strands.
In this step, you will attach the handle to the purse, while at the same time, create the knots that are the purse's decoration. Place end of one handle inside bag, about 4 inches in from the top outside edge. Hold in place. Starting from the outside, about 1/2" down from the top edge of the purse, over the handle, make a single stitch through the handle, the purse and back again through both so that the yarn comes through on the top of the purse. Tie the strands of yarn together in a square knot, trim ends to about 1/2".
Repeat step 10 on other side of purse, about 4" in from the top outside edge of the purse.
Repeat steps 10 and 11 for second handle.
