JEFFERSON COUNTY, Colo. -- As the Fourth of July weekend got under way, police and fire investigators across the metro area were out ensuring people celebrate safely.Enforcement patrols for illegal fireworks began in many jurisdictions Thursday night.West Metro Fire Investigator Tony Satriano compared knowing fireworks laws to knowing the speed limits in specific areas.
“You could get a ticket, you could get a summons, you could have your materials taken in lieu of a ticket,” Satriano said. “The important thing is safety,” Satriano added.Fines for setting off illegal fireworks can run between $250 to $1,000 in the metro area. Many unincorporated areas ban any firework that leaves the ground or explodes. Some cities, like Denver, Aurora, and Lakewood do not permit the use any individual fireworks.West Metro Fire Rescue confiscated between 800 and 900 pounds of illegal fireworks last year.Celebrants should check with their local governments, then exercise caution such as having buckets of water nearby, and closely supervising children where certain fireworks are permitted, Satriano said.Fire officials said the safest bet is to enjoy one of the many professional fireworks displays.“It’s a long weekend, we want everyone to enjoy it,” Satriano said.
