Expect Crowded Roads, But Fewer Out-Of-Towners

Fourth Of July Weekend To Be Busy, Despite High Gas Prices

The Fourth of July weekend is traditionally one of the busiest travel weekends of the year. And despite gas prices at or near record highs, AAA Colorado said this year will be no exception.

"People value their vacation time," said Eric Escudero, spokesman for AAA Colorado.

Escudero said you can expect just as many vehicles on the road this year as there were last year. The difference is, you will likely be sharing the road with more local travelers rather than out-of-towners.

AAA said more people are off-setting high gas prices by opting for vacation spots closer to home instead of making cross country road trips.

That could be mean big business for campgrounds just an hour or two from the Denver metro area.

"We've been coming here for years," said camper George Lovato who is camping with family in Clear Creek County at the West Chicago Creek campground. "It's always nice to save gas."

AAA said vacationers are also staying at cheaper hotels, eating at less expensive restaurants and shopping less while on vacation to off-set the cost of gas.
