DENVER -- It's OK to party this holiday weekend but watch that your partying doesn't spill to the streets.Law enforcement agencies will be increasing DUI patrols and conducting stationary sobriety checkpoints throughout the state. The Colorado Department of Transportation wants to encourage the public not to drink and drive over the upcoming weekend.
"With the Fourth of July falling on a Friday this year the public will enjoy a three-day weekend to celebrate, increasing the chance of alcohol-related crashes," Pam Hutton, CDOT governor's representative for highway safety, said in a news release. In addition to road blocks, CDOT's teams will be encouraging those celebrating to "Play It Safe" by distributing more than 650 one-way light rail vouchers to the public before the Rockies games at Coors Field on July 3 and July 4.MillerCoors street teams are also participating in keeping Colorado safe by handing out 1,000 Yellow Cab taxi vouchers at participating bars and establishments in Denver, as well as at a tented cab stand located at 19th Street and Wynkoop Street. The cab and light rail vouchers are only valid from July 3 through July 7.The last time the July Fourth fell on a Friday was in 2003, when 12 traffic fatalities were reported during that holiday period, eight of which were alcohol-related. Last year, July 4 fell on a Wednesday night. During last year's enforcement program, there were 640 DUI arrests, and six traffic deaths, two of them involved alcohol, according to the state patrol.
