Musgrave Unveils Plan To Lower Gas Prices

U.S. Representative Marilyn Musgrave says Congress is doing very little to help lower the price of gasoline.

She outlined a plan Monday, which she said would cut prices in half.

Musgrave said we can save at least 70 cents a gallon by drilling and bringing in oil from the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge in Alaska.

She said we can save at least 90 cents a gallon by bringing deep water oil online from off the continental shelf.

And she said we can save at least 15 cents a gallon by building more refineries.

The Republican Congresswoman said Democrats have called for investigations into price gouging and speculation. She said those investigations won't have any effect on gas prices.

She said Democrats are also calling for new taxes on oil producers. She said that will increase the price of gas.

Musgrave unveiled her plan while pumping gas for constituents at a Safeway gas station in Longmont.

"I drive a Saturn, and it's now costing me $50.00 to fill my tank and that's just nuts," said Longmont resident Sandy Meyer.

Meyer said she agrees with Musgrave's plan, not just for the oil but also for the jobs that they would provide.

"We need to bring some of those offshore jobs and out of country jobs back home," Meyer said.

Kevin Puckett is also concerned about high gas prices. He owns a small specialty sporting goods business in Longmont.

"We used to deliver all the time for free," Puckett said. "Now... I'm thinking this may need to change."

Puckett said Musgrave's plan is great, but adds that it won't be easy to implement.

"How do you get the people of this country to realize that we need to be less dependent on foreign oil sources?" Puckett asked.

Musgrave said her plan also calls for a prohibition on the sale of weapons to Saudi Arabia until the Saudis increase and maintain oil production of 10 million barrels a day.
