Forest Fires Burning Above Idaho Springs, Near Guffey
Smoke Jumpers, Air Tankers Called In

IDAHO SPRINGS, Colo. -- A wildfire was burning near Echo Lake, along Colo. Highway 103, Thursday evening. about Heavy smoke could be seen from Interstate 70, several miles away when the blaze began at about 3 p.m.Firefighters dubbed it the Devil's Canyon Fire. It had consumed about 15 acres in a very inaccessible part of the Arapahoe National Forest. Smoke jumpers were being called in from Cañon City to help battle the blaze.It was believed to have been started by a lightning strike.
A much larger fire was burning 12 miles east of Guffey in southern Park County.The 400-acre Nash Rash Fire forced the evacuation of the Bear Trap subdivision Thursday evening and another subdivision was put on standby. A shelter was set up at the Guffey school.Air tankers were called in to help fight the growing fire.Several other wildfires were burning Thursday afternoon. A 20-acre grass fire was just off Interstate 76 between Pecos Street and Sheridan Boulevard in Adams County.A number of grass fires were also burning near Simla, Colo., and some structures were threatened. The blazes are believed to have been started by lightning strikes.
