Fired Greyhounds Need Homes

Race Tracks Closing Early This Season

Colorado's only greyhound-racing facility will end its racing season about nine weeks early, leaving 100 dogs needing new homes.

Mile High Racing and Entertainment in Commerce City will hold its last race Saturday instead of Labor Day weekend.

The facility is limited to housing the greyhounds for 45 days after the last race, and the dogs must either be transported to other states to continue racing, used for breeding or adopted out of the sport and retired.

The dog owners wanted to race year-round, but the track operator only wanted to race part of the year. Mile High Racing and Entertainment told 7NEWS they tried a full season of racing in 2007 and lost $700,000. Because the two sides could not reach an agreement, the Colorado Racing Commission withdrew the rest of the dates for the racing season.

One dog owner told 7NEWS he was concerned racing may not return to Colorado, but track officials said they intend to resume dog racing in 2009.
