For Some, Watering Ban Begins Today

85,000 Customers In Lakewood, Wheat Ridge Affected By Ban

UPDATED: 2:17 p.m. MDT September 16, 2002

On Monday, 85,000 families in Jefferson County will turn off their sprinklers until spring.

Virtually no outdoor watering will be allowed for customers of Consolidated Mutual Water, which covers most of Lakewood and Wheat Ridge.

The new water restrictions mean you can't water your lawn at all. The only exceptions are trees and shrubs, which until Oct. 19, can only be watered on Saturdays between 2 and 4 p.m.

First-time violators will be issued a warning letter. Repeat violators will be subject to increasing fines based upon the number of violations and a flow restrictor will be placed on their service line (A second violation is $100, a third violation is $150 and a fourth violation is $300.)

Because of the critical nature of the water shortage, no exceptions will be granted for these restrictions, officials from Consolidated Mutal Water said.

For the 1.1 million customers of Denver Water, the watering ban will take effect Oct. 1. Aurora residents will be banned from watering their lawns starting Oct. 15.
