ATV Feud Escalates Into Threat Of Porn Shop

Neighbors Take Sides In Land Use Battle

UPDATED: 9:32 pm MDT June 18, 2008

What began as a feud over ATVs is escalating into one over porn.

The dispute is pitting neighbor against neighbor in Allenspark.

Jeff Mead operates an ATV rental business in nearby Lyons. He recently purchased a rustic building in Allenspark that used to house an art gallery.

He intended to use that building for his ATV business, but some neighbors didn't think much of the idea. They took their complaints to the county.

"The noise alone (was a problem)," said Allenspark resident Mimi Fisher. "We didn't want them here."

"They're noisy and they're destructive," added Margaret Patterson. "The real story is down the road on some private property that has been destroyed."

Patterson said ATV riders contributed to the damage of a meadow, which was originally torn up by people in four wheel drives.

"Show me the proof," Mead said. "We've never had a single customer do that, ever."

Patterson has led the fight against Mead's ATV business.

Mead said he'll turn the former art gallery into a porn gallery. He's hung a sign out front which says: "Coming soon, Patterson XXX Porn Gallery."

When asked why he was using his opponent's name on the sign, Mead said, "That's just their misfortune. The fact is it's named after the governor of New York who's actually an advocate of the first amendment. This is a first amendment issue."

The governor spells his name with one T; the name on Mead's sign is spelled with two.

"I guess we're flattered that he went through all the expense to put up a sign with our name on it," Margaret Patterson said. "It's retribution because we put a fence up to block access to that meadow, and he feels that it's impinging on his business."

Many Allenspark residents are taking sides in the dispute.

Fisher said the porn shop threat is ridiculous.

"It wouldn't last very long," she said.

"It's private property," Bob Donovan told 7NEWS. "I don't know that I agree with it (a porn shop) but if there are no regulations against it, he has a right to do with it as he sees fit as long as he's not breaking the law."

When asked how soon his porn shop might open, Mead said, "We're working with a lot of different distributors at the moment, so I don't have an answer."
