Representatives Call For End To Foreign Oil Addiction

The price of oil went up again Monday, and that could mean more price hikes at the pump.

While there is no easy fix for high gas prices, two Colorado Congressmen said Congress is taking steps to help.

"We've suspended the filling of the strategic energy reserve," said Rep. Mark Udall. "And we're in the process of cracking down on those who price gouge."

"We're also working on legislation to deal with speculation in the commodities market," the Congressman added.

Udall and Rep. Ed Perlmutter, both Democrats, said America needs to wean itself off its addiction to fossil fuels.

So does Troy Hill, vice president of Hill Petroleum Company in Arvada. Hill has invested in new tanks and pumps to dispense alternative fuels like biodiesel and E-85.

"It's not a popular position with my suppliers," Hill said. "But it is a popular position with my customers."

Hill said the decision was made to sell other fuels because the company cares about national security and because alternative fuels will help the American economy.

"There's a patriotism factor," he said.

When asked if he thought Congress needed to investigate commodities traders, Hill said, "The brokers have to be, at a Congressional level and FTC (Federal Trade Commission) level, reigned in on speculative growth. Ten years ago, three cents a gallon over night was a huge change. Now we're seeing three changes a day."

Hill said a thirty cent swing in one night can break trucking companies.

When asked if more public lands should be opened to oil exploration, Udall said, "It's already allowed on thousands of acres that haven't been drilled."

"Some parts of the Roan plateau should be drilled," Udall said. "But in a slow stage process."

But, Udall said we have to be careful, because oil is a mature industry.

"We've already said we're going to set aside parks where we can hunt and fish. Tourism is the second highest revenue stream for our economy in Colorado. Oil and gas is a finite resource. We've got to not just think 30 years out, but 50 and 100 years out."

Some motorists agree with that, and some don't.

"We ought to get rid of all the Democrats and all the environmentalists and start drilling in Alaska, or anyplace else that we've got oil," said motorist Jim Lidinsky, while filling his Chevrolet Yukon with E-85. "I could care less about the animals, they're going to survive. I might not, but they will."

But motorist Jim Feren said there's probably not enough oil left in the U.S. to satisfy demand.

Feren said Americans will have to adjust their oil appetite, "cutting down on the amount of fuel and hydrocarbons that we use."

Perlmutter said biodiesel and E-85 are good starts, but he said E-85 depends too much on corn.

"We want to move away from the feed stock. We want to have products, grasses, different kinds of bark that provide energy," the Congressman said. "As we come up with new tools to power our country, it's good for national security, good for our climate and good for jobs."

A spokesman for Republican Rep. Tom Tancredo said it is time to get serious about this issue.

"Congressman Tancredo has introduced a bill to mandate that all cars built in 2018 and after be flex fuel cars," T.Q. Houlton said. "He also believes we should be drilling in Alaska and off the coasts of Florida and Louisiana."
