Mom Of Torched Kids Pleads Insanity
1 Child Died, 4 Survived

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. -- A Colorado Springs woman accused of trying to kill her five children by setting them on fire has pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity. After Maria Darlene Gardner entered her plea Wednesday, Fourth Judicial District Judge Timothy Simmons ordered her sent to the Colorado Mental Health Institute in Pueblo for evaluation. Gardner, who also has been known as Maria Joseph, is charged with 17 felony counts ranging from first-degree murder to attempted murder to child abuse. Authorities have accused her of pouring gasoline on her five children as they slept and setting them on fire Jan. 28.
Sixteen-month-old Ashia Joseph died. The other four children, ranging in age from 3 to 9, were severely burned.The arrest affidavit in the case said a doctor found what appeared to be self-inflected wounds on Gardner's arms and ankle. Simmons said he would review the status of the case Aug. 21.
