ARAPAHOE COUNTY, Colo -- Prosecutors in the Sir Mario Owens death penalty trial rested their case Wednesday after an emotional day of family impact statements.Closing arguments are scheduled for Friday and then jurors will begin deliberating whether Owens should be executed for the murders of Javad Marshall Fields and his fiancée Vivian Wolfe.Owens was convicted last month of murdering the couple to keep Fields from testifying in the murder trial of Owens' friend Robert Ray.
The murders happened three years ago this month, and family members said they had waited a long time to tell jurors about their loved ones.Fields' grandmother Sylvia Marshall told jurors "the whole house went crazy after the murder and that it is still not the same."In her words, "everything stopped."Fields' mother, Rhonda broke down as she testified. Fighting off tears she said she misses everything about her son.She added, "I never in my life believed I would have to bury my son."First thing Thursday morning Owens will be asked if he would like to speak to the jury before they begin their deliberations. There was no indication on Wednesday as to what his decision might be.
