Gov. Bill Ritter visited Alamosa Monday to present city and county officials with a ceremonial $1 million check to help pay for water-treatment costs stemming from the salmonella outbreak in March.

The outbreak forced the town to abandon tap water for about two weeks while the water supply was cleaned. The outbreak killed one person and left 411 sick.

Ritter Vetoes Medicaid Prescription Bill

Ritter also vetoed a measure that could have reduced Medicaid payments to pharmacists.

Ritter said the bill was premature because the federal government has a similar measure pending in the courts.

The bill raised concerns that the price of some drugs would be set so low that pharmacies would stop carrying them.

Ritter signed a package of energy bills later Monday. One is designed lure large-scale solar projects by allowing regulators to consider long-term benefits when setting rates.

Environmentalists say the bill is needed because solar projects are currently more costly to operate than wind and coal plants.
