Bear Breaks Into Durango Home

A family in Durango woke up Sunday morning to an unexpected visitor, a bear, according to the Durango Herald.

The bear apparently came in through a basement door that was left either unlocked or possibly slightly open.

It's believed the bear smelled trash.

The bear made it up the basement stairs to the main floor.

The newspaper reported that the homeowner, Paul Madonna, found the bear on one side of some french doors and ended up holding the doors closed so the bear wouldn't attack him.

Madonna wife took their kids into a closet and called 911 and the neighbors for help.

The bear left after about 10 minutes.

The Durango Herald article said the family lives on Little Bear Drive.

State wildlife officials said bears might be wandering around now because their normal food, including wild berries, isn't ready yet.
