DENVER -- Two people were rushed to the hospital Wednesday evening after their car was nearly sheared by a dump truck working on the T-REX expansion project on Interstate 25, 7NEWS reported.
The victims were taken to Denver Health Medical Center with head injuries, the television station said.
Maria Manrituez is listed in critical condition. Her male companion was treated and released Wednesday night, hospital officials said.
The incident occurred just after 9 p.m. on Yale near I-25. Denver police say that the dump truck may have lost its brakes when it was coming down the offramp from northbound I-25 near Yale.
Witnesses say the truck went through the red light on Yale and crashed into a red sports car with two people inside.
Yale and the offramp from I-25 was shut down while officers investigated the incident.
Police officers will be looking to see if the accident was a mechanical failure or if the truck driver is at fault.
Since the massive T-REX project began, this is the second accident involving construction crews and traffic.
The first occurred in April, when a crane toppled over several lanes of traffic on I-25, crushing two cars and sending two people to the hospital.
Absolute Crane of Denver was fined $5,000 by the labor department for operating the crane improperly.
