Laramie Cleans Up After Storm

Some Damage Reported, No Injuries

POSTED: 2:17 pm MDT May 23, 2008

Laramie was cleaning up on Friday after an apparent tornado swept through parts of the city on Thursday afternoon. Although the storm damaged some buildings and knocked out power for much of the city, there were no reports of any injuries.

Commander Dale Stalder, spokesman for the Laramie Police Department, said the storm took the roofs off a couple of buildings around town, tore the siding from some homes and knocked down fences and power poles.

The storm hit Laramie soon after a large tornado tore through Windsor, Colo. That tornado destroyed dozens of buildings and killed one man in a campground.

"I think looking at the news again this morning from down in Windsor, Weld County, we were very, very fortunate," Stalder said of Laramie.

The National Weather Service in Cheyenne has said it believes that a tornado was involved in Laramie because of the nature of the damage. The weather service said a final determination wouldn't be made until a team surveyed the damage on Friday.

Stalder said the damage in Laramie appeared very similar to the damage he saw in news reports in Windsor, although on a much smaller scale.

Laramie citizens didn't report seeing a funnel cloud, perhaps because clouds were very low, Stalder said. However, he said, "they experienced that rush of wind, and the noise you associate with a tornado."

Laramie got about 2 inches of snow Thursday night, after the worst of the storm moved through.

Classes at Laramie Junior High School and Indian Paintbrush Elementary School were canceled on Friday because of lack of power.

About 7,000 Rocky Mountain Power customers in Laramie and the surrounding area remained without power Thursday night, the company said in a news release. The storm broke 31 distribution poles and two transmission line poles.

Crews from Wyoming and Utah were traveling to Laramie to help with repairs, but it was possible that some customers could be without power into Friday or longer, the company said. An attempt to reach a company official for an update on Friday morning was unsuccessful.

Tornadoes were also reported Thursday night in Laramie County, east of Cheyenne.

Dave Thompson, deputy emergency management director for Laramie County, said there was one confirmed touchdown by a tornado just east of Cheyenne and numerous unconfirmed reports of tornadoes and funnel clouds throughout the county.

The tornado damaged at least one barn, fencing and siding on a house, but there were no reports of injuries, Thompson said.
