The Denver district attorney charged a police officer Monday accused of jumping up and down on the back of a teenager he had taken into custody.

Charles Porter was charged with first-degree assault, said Lynn Kimbrough of the Denver District Attorney's Office.

Porter allegedly jumped several times on the back of Juan "Willie" Vasquez after he had been taken into custody and was lying on the ground, Kimbrough said.

Family told police Vasquez, 16, suffered a lacerated liver, broken ribs and kidney injuries.

The incident took place on April 18.

A police report said at least two police officers witnessed the incident that followed a foot chase after Porter allegedly saw Vasquez consuming alcohol.

Porter, 40, was released on a $5,000 bond. He is scheduled to appear in court on May 23.
