DENVER -- A large fire consumed almost an entire block of stores in northeast Denver Sunday morning.A Denver firefighter suffered minor injuries while battling the blaze, but no one else was hurt. The blaze, in the Holly Square Shopping Center between 34th and 35th avenues along Holly Street, was first reported around 4 a.m.
The strip mall along the block included a Family Dollar store, Tyson Market and at least eight other businesses."It was like a big explosion," said a witness at the scene. The flames were so intense at one point that firefighters were ordered to back out -- a command given when there is a danger the fire might overtake them inside a structure."The whole structure was just engulfed," said another witness.
The fire was finally contained at 7 a.m.The cause of the fire will have to be determined after the debris cools down."At this time, it is still under investigation," said Assistant Fire Chief Stephen Garrod. "It did not look criminal in nature and they were going to further investigate."No damage estimate was immediately available."We don't have much out here, but this is our neighborhood," said a witness who identified himself only as KG.
