A newspaper carrier who spotted a house fire in El Paso County around 3 a.m. Friday helped save lives and homes.

The El Paso County Sheriff's Office reported the man called 911 for help, then went to the home on Horizon Point Drive and woke up the woman inside. He made sure she and her dog both got out safely.

The Colorado Center Municipal Fire District and the Colorado Springs Fire Department responded minutes later. Firefighters found the home fully engulfed in flames.

The fire was under control in roughly two hours, but the home was a total loss.

Four other nearby homes were evacuated, but did not catch fire.

Fire investigators with the El Paso County Sheriff's Office stated the fire was not criminal in nature. The fire is still under investigation but due to the intense heat and significant damage, investigators may not be able to determine the exact cause.

The Pikes Peak Chapter of the Red Cross is working with the family.
