GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. -- A memorial service is scheduled Thursday night in Grand Junction for a newborn boy found dead at a couple's home last month. The boy was the child of 22-year-old Morgan Hite, who now faces criminal charges in connection with his death.Authorities have said Hite gave birth to the boy in a neighbor's bathtub in February, carried him in a plastic garbage bag to her parents' home, put the boy in a tote bag and left it in a closet in the spare bedroom.
The child's remains were found April 29 by Hite's parents. The memorial ceremony is planned for the lawn of the Old County Courthouse in Grand Junction at 5:15 p.m. Organizers of the memorial ceremony said they also plan to re-educate residents about Colorado's Safe Haven Law. That law allows mothers of newborns 72 hours to give up their child to a firefighter or hospital employee without prosecution. Hite is currently awaiting extradition from Alaska. She's scheduled to appear in court June 6.
